Assistant/Associate
Professor of Epidemiology -
(12
month tenure-track)
Virginia Commonwealth
University,
Department
of Epidemiology and Community Health
The Department of Epidemiology and Community Health invites applications for several tenure-track academic positions in epidemiology. The Department of Epidemiology and Community Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a vital and growing research and teaching department in the emerging school of public health. Epidemiology at VCU is grounded by frameworks that acknowledge that causal factors are nested one within another, with environmental factors, genetic factors, behaviors and social contexts integral to disease processes. With this perspective, we embrace a team science approach to promoting health and reducing disease burden. There is active collaboration with many faculty members in other departments and centers of the School of Medicine and VCU.
The University is developing a School of Public Health within which the current Departments of Epidemiology and Community Health, Biostatistics, Health Administration, and Social and Behavioral Health are core departments. Now is an exciting time to join the Department and play a critical role in the establishment of the first School of Public Health in Virginia. VCU boasts one of the country’s most comprehensive health sciences centers--the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Allied Health Professions, and the Massey Cancer Center as part of the VCU Medical Center. Moreover, the Department is ideally located in Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, and close to Washington DC, providing excellent opportunities for interaction and research collaboration with practitioners and policy makers in state and federal agencies.
Qualifications: Applicants must (1) possess a doctoral degree in epidemiology or related field, (2) have a strong research background with an emerging or existing funded research program, and (3) have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially with students and faculty. Candidates whose research focus includes: social epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, and environmental epidemiology are particularly encouraged to apply. We value experience teaching and mentoring at the graduate level. The successful candidate will have strong quantitative and methodologic expertise. Applicants must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The successful candidates will play a central role in the developing School of Public Health and the Department’s program of teaching and research. Faculty members will be essential members of a team developing creative, innovative approaches to public health education and collaborative research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop/sustain an independent, funded research program.
Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with experience. TO APPLY: Send curriculum vitae, a cover letter highlighting qualifications and research interests, and the names and addresses of three professional references by email to: epi@vcu.edu or mail to: Kate L. Lapane, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, P.O. Box 980212, Richmond, VA 23298-0212, phone: (804) 628-2518. Applications will be reviewed as received, and the positions will remain open until filled.
