Many graduate students lack professional work experience or work experience in the field of public health. The public health internship allows students to acquire hands-on, practical experience that complements course work and current professional knowledge and skills.
Each student intern works with a practice site supervisor who assigns tasks, instructs the student in new skills, and evaluates the student’s progress. The site supervisor communicates with the Public Health Internship Director, who assigns a S/U/F grade for the course based on the site supervisor’s input and the student’s documentation of the internship experience. The internship experience may give MPH students an advantage in finding employment after graduation.
Minimum Requirements
Students wishing to enroll in the Public Health Internship
must have completed a minimum of 18 hours of coursework, including
Epidemiology 571. As it is more beneficial to the
student to have completed most of the MPH Program coursework before
starting an internship, we recommend that (full-time) students not
enroll in the internship until the third or fourth semester in the
Program. Each student intern must work a minimum of 180 hours in the
internship to qualify for 3 credit hours.
