The purpose of the MPH Program Health Disparities Service-Learning Collaborative (HDSLC) is to incorporate service-learning, designed to reduce health disparities, into the MPH Program curriculum, and in doing so, to form lasting relationships with community partners. Service-learning combines regular classroom learning with community service and structured reflection on the service experience. Students in service-learning work with community partners in community settings to solve a problem or improve a situation identified by the community. Students work with, and learn from, community partners and citizens as they collaborate on the project at hand. Service-learning often requires students to work outside of their comfort zones, involving them in learning experiences they would not normally encounter in the classroom. In addition, service-learning incorporates structured reflection both inside and outside the classroom that enriches the learning experience.
