in advance by the instructor. The in class presentation on the project
shall be accompanied by a paper outlining your work and talk.
TYPICAL STUDENT PROJECT TOPICS FROM PAST YEARS:
Lecture 1 Introduction and Overview
Definition of industrial hygiene; the occupational health team and the role of
the industrial hygienist on that team; occupational health hazards in the workplace
environment; the relevant governmental regulatory agencies; professional and
trade associations; standards; professional associations, and the like. Chapters
1 & 3.
Lecture 2 Legal Aspects of the Occupational Environment
Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970; OSHA, USEPA, NRC, USDOT; the
Federal Administrative Procedures Act; the promulgation and issuance
of occupational safety and health standards and regulation; enforcement
of OSHA standards; OSHA state plans; Virginia’s OSHA programs and
the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry; workers’ compensation.
Chapter 4
Lecture 3 Comprehensive Exposure Assessment
General principles of evaluating worker exposure in the industrial environment;
Epidemiological surveillance; Determination of the magnitude of the risk
presented by toxic substances and physical agents present in the workplace;
technologies available to determine exposure levels; routes of exposure
and their significance; an introduction to risk assessment; the industrial
hygiene survey; Interpretation of sampling results. Chapters 5, 6
Lecture 4 Environmental & Occupational Toxicology
Epidemiology studies, toxicology studies, case reports and clinical observations
by health care providers; in vitro and in vivo studies; the problem of
linking exposure and causation. Anatomy and physiology of the
lungs; respirable and non-respirable dusts; diseases of the lung; pneumoconiosis,
including asbestos & silica diseases; black lung disease; byssinosis; radiology;
pulmonary function testing. Heavy metals: lead, cadmium, chromium,
arsenic; dust exposure and pneumoconiosis; organic solvents; pesticides/herbicides;
ethylene oxide; other miscellaneous chemical hazards. Chapter 2
Lecture 5 Air Monitoring & Sampling
Air sampling; direct reading methods; colorimetric sampling tubes; sample
collection tubes for polar and non-polar gases and vapors, passive dosimeters;
personal v. area sampling; high volume and low volume pumps; importance
of the laboratory analytical technique; laboratory accreditation and licensing;
standard methods - OSHA, NIOSH, USEPA, and others. Chapters 10, 11,
12, 13, 14, 15
Lecture 6 Evaluating & Modeling Worker Exposure; Risk Assessment
Planning of the work site walkthru; Development of sampling strategy (who,
what, where, when, & how); description & application of various
inhalation exposure models; the four steps of risk assessment; dose-response
relationships; public policy implications & applications of risk
assessment. Chapters 7, 8, 9
Lecture 7 Noise; Definitions & physical principles; health issues & human physiology; Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL’s); measurement & instrumentation; methods of control; regulatory issues (OSHA); hearing conservation programs; C. 21
Lecture 8 Biological Monitoring & BEI’s;
ACGIH Biological Exposure Indices; the metabolism of contaminants; sample
collection and analysis; BEI’s and medical surveillance; Examples:
blood lead levels in workers per OSHA standards and in children per CDC
and Virginia Department of Health guidelines, urinary phenol levels per
OSHA standards; regulatory implications; Chapter 16
